Sunday Nite (8/1): Check In, Campers Arrive at their own convenience.
Time to resupply/supply in town if needed, chance to get oriented to their campsites and the Facility. The campground is only two miles from downtown Elkins, and even shorter distance to Wal-Mart. Camp staff not available for activities this day, but will be there to greet campers and answers questions from 4pm on.
Monday : Activity Day One: Hike to Bickles Knob, Stuart Recreation Area
Make your own Breakfast, Pack a Lunch, Dress Comfortably for a Day Hike,
Bring Cameras, Binoculars, and ID books. Beautiful nature hikes with mountain views from Bickles Knob in the
Stuart Recreation Area. Extra water and guiding provided by camp staff.
Dinner Provided at Camp that Night
Tuesday: Activity Day Two: Cheat River Experience,
Blackwater Outdoor Adventures
Make your own Breakfast, Pack a Lunch, Dress for a big day on the river bathing suits, sunblock, bug spray, river shoes. Extra water and a dry bag for storage will be provided by camp guides. Dinner Provided at Camp that Night
Choices:
1..Whitewater Adventure : Whitewater Rafting at Cheat Narrows.
2. Flatwater Float: Canoeing or Kayaking on a Peaceful Six Mile Float on the Upper Cheat River. Guiding provided by camp staff.
Wednesday: Activity Day Three: Rock Climbing at Seneca Rocks,
Make your own Breakfast, Pack a Lunch. Dress comfortably for a day of hiking and rock climbing. A full day of climbing and professional instruction at Seneca Rocks or the Via Ferrata at Nelson Rocks Preserve. All climbing equipment provided by staff at the Climbing Schools. (helmets, harnesses, shoes, and all ropes and hardware). Dinner Provided at Camp that Night.
Thursday: Activity Day Four: Relax and Go Out on Your Own Day, Swimming and Fishing
A day for rest and non-structured activity. Staff will provide information on local sites to visit. Options include Historic Elkins & Heritage Train Excursions, Smoke Hole and Seneca Caverns, Stuarts Recreation Area, Green Bank Observatory and others. Bring your mountain bikes and ride the Allegheny Highland Rail Trail, with trailhead in Elkins. Another option: staff will take children swimming and fishing at Stuarts Recreation Area while parents go sightseeing or shopping. Dinner on your own this Night. Evening activities back at camp provided by camp staff after dinner.
Friday: Activity Day Five: Morning Geology Study, Afternoon Checkout
Morning excursion to local fossil hunting sites with staff geologist to learn more about the local formations in the area. Return to camp for Lunch. Afternoon camp clean up
And checkout.

Night Activities for most days: Dependent on Camper Interest. Musicians will be provided with the chance to learn more about their instrument, as well as participate in jam sessions with staff music instructors and each other. Games and campfire time (smores, ghost stories) will also be provided on nights when campers are in camp fairly early and rested. If you want to leave camp, take in a family music and variety show at the American Mountain Theater in downtown Elkins.
Augusta Heritage Center: August 1-6, 2010 is Bluegrass Week, Swing Week, with mini-classes in Appalachian folklore and crafts. Families are welcome to participate in activities being held at the Augusta Center that week, at their own convenience and cost. This Augusta Heritage Week culminates with a public evening concert. Families from previous camps have taken advantage of this weekend time after camp to enjoy a relaxing weekend of local bluegrass music and folk art in the beautiful Elkins area. It's a great wrap up to the Appalachian Immersion Experience.
NOTE: The Hospitality Barn is open throughout the entire Camp week. Use our facilities to cook your meals, cool your drinks, store whatever needs stored.
